PERSONA DESCRIPTION

Physical Description:
Maera was attractive enough when she was younger. Her blonde hair is long, straight, and well-kept. She keeps it tied back in a braid, or loose with a leather thong. There are quite a few silver hairs threading their way through, but since her hair is light, it's hard to notice them. Her eyes are gray, and set in a round face with strong features and a jaw line that is a shade on the heavy side. Physically, her almost constant state of pregnancy has left her on the heavy side. Maera was always built with strong, big bones, however, which has enabled her to carry so many pregnancies to term.
Style of dress:
Mostly loose, comfortable dresses in various styles and colors, and adaptable skirts to allow for growth during pregnancies. She doesn't approve of fripperies, so she doesn't wear any jewelry or anything.
Habits/Hobbies:
Maera loves children- she'd have to, with her brood. She spends most of the time when she's not working looking after children- her own, and sometimes others. She does, however, like to sew and embroider, and is very deft at mending clothing.

Personality:
Maera is incredibly good natured and laid-back. She's the type of woman that people come to with problems, and children come to with skinned knees. She gets along with just about everyone, and is very good at soothing away anxieties. This is useful for her patients. She's good at taking charge when she needs to, but she'd prefer to leave that to others.
Background/history:
Maera's mother, Carra, was the midwife for the weyr before her. Maera was the youngest of 8 children, the other sevens boys. Her eldest brother is a full 20 turns older than she is, and had already left the weyr for the smithcraft when she was born. The very turn she was born, her second eldest brother Impressed his blue dragon. Many turns later, his dragon would be killed in Threadfall, and Eldamar opted to suicide and follow him. Their deaths were a tragic blow to the family.
As a child, Maera hardly knew any of her siblings. The only one close to her age was Celos, and he preferred to play with the boys in the weyr his age. Maera was perfectly content to tag along with her mother. She watched and learned her mother's trade, so that by the time she was 14, she was helping her mother as an assistant. She never properly apprenticed to the healercraft, since midwifery was highly specialized, and her mother vehemently denied the necessity of a craft education for the job. She did, however, work closely with the weyr healers and learn a lot about their craft.
At 18, Maera had her first child, Iarwain, as the result of flight aftermath. Two Turns later, her mother died just before the birth of her second son, Blaedd. Maera then took on the duties of the weyr midwife, as well as having 10 more children over the subsequent 18 turns, in nine separate pregnancies. All of them were the results of flights or temporary flings - Maera has never had a desire to settle for one man. With the exception of her twins, none of her children have the same father.
Her three oldest children have left the weyr - Iarwain is a journeyman harper stationed at Ista, Blaedd is a vinter at Cibryen Hold, and Alaena, who wants to follow in her mother's footsteps, is an apprentice at the Healer Hall. Maera insisted she apprentice, feeling that this was one mistake she made that her daughter was not going to repeat. The two oldest that still remain, Roslin and Aethan, are resisting their mothers efforts to place them in a craft or job, preferring to hold on to their childhood. With six children still under 10, and another on the way, Maera just doesn't have the time to argue with them about it. All of her births were easy and resulted in healthy children with the exception of one - her third daughter, Reilyn, was born very early, and has been a very sickly child from the start. She nearly died in the plague that swept the areas near Cibryen when she was about 6, and her mother thinks it's a miracle that she's still alive. While not a mooncalf, she's not exactly right, either. A very docile child, she'll do whatever is asked of her, but has to be told what to do. She's not really expected to live to adulthood.
Prolific is a mild word to describe Maera, having given birth to 13 children in 12 pregnancies. That being said, patients find it reassuring that she clearly knows a lot about her craft.
