PERSONA DESCRIPTION

Height/Weight: 6'2/172 lbs
Physical Description: C'rin's chin-length hair used to be brown, but as the Turns passed it slowly became streaked with gray. Now it's predominantly silver-gray, with a few dark brown strands holding out here and there. His eyes are pale, clear green, contrasting with his weathered caramel-coloured skin. His face is also vaguely Asiatic – C'rin seems to have a wide variety of ethnicities in his ancestry.

As a dragonrider, C'rin is muscular, but since he was always slightly scrawny his build is more wiry and lanky than bulky. Over his forty-five Turns of dragonriding, he has of course acquired several minor threadscores, but if he believed in luck he would count himself lucky that he has nothing major. Despite his age, C'rin's posture is still very upright, which he counts himself to be lucky for.

Style of dress: In a word, sensible. And comfortable. Anything that won't distract him and doesn't inhibit his movement is fair game. Colour is of no major consequence.
Habits/Hobbies:

Pets: None.
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual

Personality: C'rin is a very minimalistic, utilitarian sort of person. He abides by the rules, doesn't take change very well, and tends to be quiet and efficient. He's is a very dedicated and conscientious worker – if somebody is relying on him to do something, then he will do it. He's also honest, and respects honesty in others. If there's one thing he hates, it's liars – and people who can't control their tempers. In his youth, C'rin used to be a very fiery sort – violent, even. However, he worked hard at controlling that, and now comes across as very mild-mannered and gentle. The habit of suppressing his temper is, by now, so inbuilt that he doesn't even think about it. In C'rin's case, the saying proved to be true – practice makes perfect.

In fact, despite his dedication and patience even with the most boring of tasks, C'rin is not an exceedingly dry character. He has a good sense of humour, and a very kind heart. Even though he often seems detached and impersonal, he actually has a rather warm personality – he's just a bit awkward and shy, and he keeps a tight rein of his emotions.

Drab – yes, maybe C'rin is a little drab. He isn't a very memorable sort. However, underneath the mildness, C'rin is actually very forceful. While he is very good at following orders, over the Turns he has learned how to give them, too, and he has also always had a very strong will – however, it was only ever apparent in his sudden fits of anger, which were always very incongruous with his shyness. With age, C'rin's will has not weakened – it has grown stronger. As an authority figure, he's not an inspirational leader but rather a dedicated teacher who can be surprisingly stern and unyielding when necessary. It often comes as a bit of a shock – C'rin seems to be a passive, indulgent push-over. Nothing could be further from the truth – except, perhaps, for the passive bit. C'rin is the sort who chooses to “be” rather than “do”.

Background/history: Born to a Holdguard and Journeywoman Weaver, Cadarin was the second of four children. His parents were loving, and he got on well with his siblings – at least, as far as siblings go. However, Cadarin was a shy, quiet sort most of the time, preferring to keep to himself, never stepping on anybody's toes... until he angered. His siblings learned fast not to push him too far. When they did, he exploded into a violent temper.

It was very puzzling to his parents – Cadarin was so polite, quiet and attentive usually, yet their other children brought back tales of his sudden explosions – and bruises, sometimes, to match. Once or twice Dara and Caian even saw one of his outbursts for themselves. When they talked to him about it, Cadarin was truly apologetic – but his temper was like a constant itch at the back of his mind which he couldn't control. Nevertheless, it never brought any major problems.

That is, until one day Cadarin was being teased by another holdbrat, and eventually broke said holdbrat's nose.

The retribution from his parents was severe. However, Cadarin learned something from the whole experience – he had to control his anger. It was, at first, very difficult, but looking back he will smile at his younger self's frustration, for that was only the first step on a very long journey.

At twelve, he followed his mother into the weavercraft – it wasn't much of a surprise, since he had never shown any inclination to being a Holdguard, nor really any other craft. While his sister Raca seemed to show a knack for the weaving itself, Cadarin's specialty was the dyes. Together, Raca, Dara and Cadarin were a good team, Cadarin and Raca being apprenticed under their mother. However, Cadarin never had a real passion for weavercraft. He liked it, and it wasn't as though there was something else he'd rather do, but it was a bit dull to him.

At the age of eighteen, Cadarin was advanced to the rank of journeyman. It didn't really mean that much to him, though – Cadarin had never had a passion for weaving, even though it was a good craft and he couldn't think of anything he'd rather do. However, it was for this reason that when he was Searched, Cadarin didn't turn it down. It surprised him that he was Searched – for Turns, the dragons had just passed him over. He couldn't think of what had changed about him that they should pick him out now. Nonetheless, he didn't turn down the offer – it would be different, and possibly better, to be a dragonrider.

So, Cadarin stood for the upcoming clutch... and didn't Impress. It was a surprisingly bitter blow – in his Candidacy he had come to like Weyr life, and he truly wanted to Impress. Therefore, he stayed on as a Candidate, waiting for the next clutch. It came when he was nineteen. Searchriders were sent out again.

To Cadarin's surprise, they came back with his little sister, Ianda. Apparently, she had just been about to finally choose a craft and follow their mother into weaving, when she was noticed by one of the Searchdragons.

When the day of the Hatching came about, Cadarin was delighted that Ianda Impressed, a beautiful blue. However, he was even more delighted when a brown stumbled from one of the last eggs on the Sands – and headed towards him! The dragon told him that his name was Phiresath, and that he was now C'rin.

C'rin's weyrlinghood was, at first, uneventful. He was a diligent student, who truly loved dragonriding.

Then his temper started flaring up again.

Since Phiresath was a steadying influence, and C'rin was also taught a lot about self-control, it hadn't been noticeable – he had kept it in check. However, as time wore on, C'rin's control started to slip a little bit. Then, once, on a rest day, he had been having an argument with another weyrling. Enraged, C'rin made as if to strike the other weyrling, and very nearly did – though he stopped himself just in time.

Nonetheless, the punishment was severe. It also taught C'rin a valuable lesson: his self-control was not good enough. It became one of his major focuses, when he wasn't learning or doing chores.

There were no other incidents during C'rin's weyrlinghood, though he came very close. However, after eighteen months, he and Phiresath graduated with the rest of their class, into a fighting wing. For a while, C'rin's life was once again uneventful, at least for a dragonrider.

Then, when he was twenty-two, he met Katrin.

She was a greenrider, who he met one evening during supper. Even though she was shy and seemed as though she were perpetually worried and a little unhappy, they fell to talking, and the only thing one could say is that something clicked between them. After a while, they became close friends – and, when Katrin asked C'rin if he would accompany her to an upcoming Gather, something more. Their relationship grew stronger very quickly, and soon they were talking of becoming weyrmated.

The next time Azarith, Katrin's green, rose, Phiresath chased... but didn't win. C'rin was partially upset, but not very much – he knew that Katrin still loved him, even if another brown had caught her Azarith. A month later, they became weyrmates.

Nine turns later, disaster struck. Katrin, who had been in the kitchens talking with a friend, was involved in an accident involving a pan of boiling oil. Nobody was hurt – nobody except Katrin.

She was blinded and scarred.

C'rin was devastated. He knew that Katrin had reveled in the beauty of the world around her, and had also loved flying Thread – now she could do nothing. It was awful for him – even now, he can only imagine what it must have been like for her. For a while, their relationship was very rocky. Eventually, things settled down. However, Katrin seemed very despondent. C'rin thought that she might never get over the loss.

Then, several months later, he discovered that his prediction might very well not be true. Katrin told him that she was pregnant. C'rin would have expected her to be despondent at this news – she had never said anything about a desire to be a mother. However, she seemed almost... pleased.

When the child, a boy, was born, they named him Darin. He was healthy and sturdy, and Katrin delighted in him. C'rin, between Threadfall, repairing his riding straps, tending to Phiresath and resting, didn't have as much time to devote to Darin as Katrin did, but took as much of an interest in his son as possible.

Six Turns later, Katrin became pregnant again. This time, the child was a girl – Rikka, they named her. The Turns went by, the children grew up, C'rin and Katrin grew older – their lives were ordinary and fairly happy. When Darin was fourteen, he was Searched to stand as a Candidate. At the upcoming clutch, he Impressed a green, much to C'rin and Katrin's delight.

Once D'rin's weyrlinghood was over, however, he only flew in the wings of Cibryen for several months. Then, in a reckless maneuver, D'rin's green flew straight into a clump of Thread. His dragon went between – and never came out again. It was awful for C'rin and Katrin, but they were both dragonriders and knew that such things happened, though it didn't lessen the blow much.

Rikka, meanwhile, was starting to express an interest in the weavercraft. When she was twelve, she said that she wanted to become a weaver apprentice. After some discussion with Ianda and Raca, C'rin and Katrin sent Rikka off to her aunt Raca, to learn weavercraft.

They were alone again. After a few months, however, Katrin started to become more and more unhappy. Worried, C'rin did the best he could, but nothing seemed to help. At around the same time, there was a goldflight. Phiresath chased, but predictably didn't win. However, instead of ending up with Katrin, C'rin somehow ended up with a flightmoth – a girl who worked in the Lower Caverns. C'rin dismissed the incident from his mind, as Katrin didn't get upset about it, until nine months later, when the same girl came to him and told him she had given birth to a boy – Kattor. Surprised, C'rin did some quick thinking, and for one of the few times in his life decided to keep something secret from Katrin. He thought that the fact that he had had a son, especially by another woman, would probably upset her rather than comfort her. However, whenever possible, C'rin made discreet visits to the Lower Caverns to watch his son grow up, and occasionally help in raising him. Kattor has no idea that C'rin is his father; to the boy, they're merely friends, and C'rin prefers it that way; it doesn't much matter. Often, he even forgets it himself.

As to Katrin, she was starting to worry C'rin more and more. She started eating less, and sleeping less. For some six turns, this continued, with Katrin going on a very slow but steady downward cycle.

Then, one day, while C'rin was bathing Phiresath, his brown started to keen. With a horrible feeling in the pit of his stomach, C'rin asked Phiresath who had died – though he thought that he probably already knew. His guess had been correct – Katrin had mounted up onto Azarith one last time, and the greenpair had gone between.

C'rin was, in a word, devastated. Looking back, he knows it was one of the roughest periods of his life – he had loved Katrin very much, just as she had loved him. He can't begin to think how unhappy she must have been to kill herself. One of his greatest comforts, other than Phiresath, was his sister, Ianda, but even with Ianda's love and support, it took C'rin a long time to get over the loss.

Now, ten Turns later, he knows that he is getting old. Katrin was only fifty when she went between for the last time, and C'rin had been fifty-two, but now he has passed sixty and he sees that he's getting over the hill. He has experience, it's true, but age is wearing down his body. Therefore, C'rin jumped at the chance when, one day, Adina summoned him to her office and asked him if he wanted to be the assistant weyrlingmaster for Margyth's upcoming clutch.

DRAGON INFORMATION

Name:
Phiresath
Color: Brown
Weyr/Age Impressed: Cibryen/19
Date Hatched/Sire/Dam: 12.13.2502/Gold Torolth/Bronze Nazeth
Size/Wingspan: 35 ft/53

Physical Description: Phiresath is a large, sturdy-looking brown. His hide is a rich middle-brown colour, with dusty brown mottling on his chest and back. He's bulky and muscular, with stamina if not agility. A few whitish threadscores stand out here and there on his hide.
Personality: Phiresath is a very deliberate sort of dragon. He makes his choices with great care. He's a kindly, paternal dragon, with a knack for peacemaking. He may not be imaginative, and his personality is generally bland, but he's almost like some ancient monument. While not particularly intelligent, even by draconic standards, Phiresath is a veritable rock of good sense and wisdom. He's a constant – predictable, benevolent and amiable. Phiresath is anything but ambitious, and takes care not to cause conflict, but he is unswayed in the face of adversity or disagreement, once he's really decided on his stance. Like his rider, he doesn't take well to change, and he also almost never changes himself.
