PERSONA DESCRIPTION
Height/Weight: 6'-1", 165 lbs
Physical Description:
Iarwain is a tall, lean man. He has a fantastic metabolism, because no matter how much he eats, he never seems to gain any weight, much to his chagrin. If it were up to him, he'd have way more weight on him than he does, and therefore look less like a scrawny teenager. That being said, he is an attractive man, with short blond hair and blue eyes that help him charm whatever audience he has. His face is long and thin, with highish cheekbones and an almost feminine cast. He always has a smile on his face.
Style of dress:
Iarwain is perhaps one of the few Harpers on Pern who despises Harper blue, despite the fact that it actually looks good on him by setting off his eyes. The only thing he owns in that color is one of his Gather shirts. He does, however, like to dress nicely. He gets most of his clothes tailor made, when he can afford to on a Journeyman Harper's wages.
Habits/Hobbies:
This young Harper is an expert talker, and more specifically, flirter. In his spare time he seeks people out to talk to, just out of a curiosity about different points of view. He is happy with his career because it gives him the chance to travel and meet many different kinds of people.
Pets: None
Sexual Orientation: Straight, but not 'narrow' (has been with men, but hasn't been with any who have fit in a long term relationship and considers his primary attraction to be to women)
Personality:
Iarwain is powerfully charismatic. He's the sort of person that attracts attention the moment he walks into a room. As corny as it is, he really does charm as easily as he breathes. It's very rare that a person who encounters Iarwain comes away disliking him.
Beyond being the ultimate people person, Iarwain doesn't really have or develop opinions of his own, merely listens to what others think and takes whatever stance he feels will be beneficial to the situation. He'll argue both sides of a debate just to keep people talking. It's a flaw that leads him to seem very fake in one-on-one company. He doesn't develop any close friends outside of large social groups, mostly because he doesn't really have the same personable charm in one-on-one interactions.
This isn't because he doesn't want to make friends, but his public elasticity hides a crippling sense of shyness in one-on-one situations. While he would like to have people in his life where he didn't feel like he had to be 'on', he has no idea how to take off the Harper identity long enough to really figure out who HE is or what he's interested in. He's terrified that if he's not entertaining, people won't like him, so he doesn't really know how to let his hair 'down'. He's much better at gauging the energy of a group and fitting into it than he is at figuring out how to deal with a single person. (Not that any of this is conscious, mind, but it affects how he deals with individuals.)
He's intelligent, and a quick study, or he wouldn't have been admitted to the Harper Hall, but the bulk of his talents lie in his ability to understand people, and more importantly, to get them to understand him and accept his point of view. It makes him a strong asset to the political side of the Harper Hall, as he gets on so well with many different kinds of people. He causes people to respect and trust him simply by talking to them and being charming; a very useful skill for a harper to have.
Background/history:
Iarwain is the oldest child of fourteen. His mother, Cibryen Weyr's midwife, raised them all herself, which made for a very hectic household. Luckily for Iarwain, he had three whole Turns as an only child, and another four where he only had two siblings. It meant that most of his childhood was pretty normal, or as normal as a childhood can be in a Weyr. He was not atypical for a young male weyrbrat; he got himself into plenty of trouble, occasionally tried to sneak a look at whatever clutches he could, etc.
He excelled in Harper classes, but really only did enough to get by. It wasn't that he didn't enjoy what he was learning, he just had so much more fun being outdoors, hanging out with friends, and even listening to the adults talk. He was always precocious in that he spent a lot of time talking with adults, and by the time he was about ten turns of age, some of them were even starting to talk to him like he was a peer, not a kid.
His interest in the Harpercraft really came when he started to learn about music instruments from the weyr Harpers. He was moderately good at it; not stellar, but he could definitely pick things up quick enough. It began to occur to him, and to his mother, that this might be a good craft for him after all. At the Harpers' urging, Iarwain was formally apprenticed at 12, and left for the harper hall to study. Never one to be shy, he was immediately accepted into his peer group there, simply because he made himself someone who was easy to get along with. For the same reason, most of his instructors took to him, as well. The only burr in his early experiences at the Hall was the fact that Iarwain was not really used to having to work at anything; it was a rude awakening to have his instructors actually force him to work.
Four hard Turns of work later, Iarwain was assigned as an apprentice to the Harper at Lemos. Outside of his limited experiences at Fort, this was the first time Iarwain had spent any amount of time at an actual Hold. It was a bit of a shock for him, but he was fascinated by the differences in the various subcultures he had experienced thus far in his life. Lemos is the one place in his life where Iarwain has ever been berated for being too quiet. He was so worried about messing up that he didn't let himself really be who he was, so people got the impression that he was shy. He spent a Turn at Lemos, and by the end he was beginning to open up and be more himself.
His second assignment was at Ruabhainn. He didn't actually do much teaching during that time, as Ruabhainn had more than enough Harpers. He primarily used that time to become a better instrumentalist, and to entertain at night. It was his shortest assignment, as after six months, the Harpers found a better place for him at Telgar.
Iarwain took to Telgar; he enjoyed the location, and got along very well with Lord Lian, Lady Kew, and their children. Telgar was the first Hold where Iarwain was able to travel on his own to the outlying cotholds; about halfway through his time at Telgar he was promoted to journeyman (at the age of 18).
After receiving his new rank, he remained at Telgar for another 8 months before he was reassigned yet again, this time to Tillek Hold, where he was the primary assistant to the Harper in charge of teaching Lord Aresan's children. He struck up a very good relationship with Aresan's second son, Aderin, who was eleven Turns old at the time. He was also the one who recommended that Aresan's bastard son, Cedri, be apprenticed to the Harpercraft, both because the boy had a keen mind, and because the young Harper understood perfectly that everyone but Aresan saw the boy as physical evidence of an embarrassment, and it was better to quietly send him away in the name of apprenticing. This act won him friends and admirers in the Tillek retinue.
Once again, Iarwain wasn't allowed to stay long at Tillek. After a little over a Turn, he was sent to Ista, as a temporary replacement after they lost their primary Harper. It was a heady experience to be in charge, but despite the nice weather and friendly people, Iarwain was just as glad when the permanent replacement arrived. He stayed on at Ista a little while longer until Masterharper Nova decided there were older Harpers who required the nice weather more than he did.
After that was a series of very short assignments; three months each at High Reaches, Bitra, Cibryen, and Nerat, before he was finally assigned to Roaring Cliffs almost two turns ago. He has enjoyed the fact that he's been so many different holds in the past seven Turns, but he's hoping to stay at Roaring Cliffs a little bit longer than any of the others before moving on, so he will finally get a chance to settle in somewhere.
