PERSONA DESCRIPTION
Height/Weight: 5'11", 165 lbs
Physical Description: Adina is tall and fit, though in her older age she finds she is growing a bit plump around the middle. Her soft hazel eyes are framed with a few wrinkles and her nose is just a bit too large for her face. She has long chestnut hair that is peppered with gray strands, which is braided and tucked into her helmet during flight. Otherwise she usually keeps it in a bun, as she finds that it often gets in her way. She kept it long for J'tan, who loved it, and now that he is gone she can't seem to part with it.
Style of dress: Prefers skirts when she is able to wear them, and has many beautiful gather dresses. But due to her workload as a goldrider, she is most often seen in plain trousers and an embroidered tunic. Adina loves soft earthy colors like gray, brown and green.
Habits/Hobbies: Embroidery, which she learned from her foster mother when she was young. Over the years she has become quite good at it, and has embroidered most of her tunics.
Pets: None, no time for that nonsense.
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Personality: Adina is the sort of woman who projects an aura of distinguished elegance at all times. One you might feel compelled to be respectful to, even if you didn't know her rank. Her years as Weyrwoman of Fort Weyr have taught her discipline and tolerance. Adina is a no nonsense sort of woman, and she likes to keep busy. Having nothing to do annoys her to no end. She is normally calm and patient, but can snap out a command or reprimand in a flash if need be. That's about as much as she lets her temper show. She likes things done a certain way, and that's the way it will be.
Background/history: Adina was born to a weyr-mated pair of riders, greenrider Parmina and brownrider A'dari. She is very close to her sister Amira, as they are only one Turn apart in age. They grew up as weyrbrats together, causing general mischief and fun. Adina's childhood was uneventful in most respects. Until one Turn when Adina was told she could finally become a Candidate. She had only 13 Turns at the time, but the dragons sensed a strong potential in the young girl. Amira however, had no desire to be a dragonrider, unusual to be sure, but it was her choice. Adina was saddened when Amira decided to become a tanner, and headed off to the local Hall one Turn later to learn her trade. Her best friend was gone, and there was no one to take Amira's place.
Three Turns later she still had not Impressed. Another Hatching came, and Adina was on the hot sands of the Hatching ground preparing herself for another round of disappointment. However, her disappoint was to be short-lived. Suddenly, a loud CRACK! was heard. Everyone in the stands turned their heads as the little golden dragonet made her entrance into the world. Adina's breath caught in her throat as she projected all the love and welcome she had in the world. And suddenly, she was hers. "Her name is Quaranth!" cried Adina to the roaring crowd as the tears of happiness streamed down her cheeks.
Adina's world was complete. She was enormously proud of Quaranth, and found that being a goldrider was a lot harder than she'd imagined it to be. But being a dragonrider was something she'd dreamed of her entire life, and so, she threw herself into it with gusto. Slowly, she learned the ways of a Weyrwoman. How to be stern and fair, how to keep records, tithes, discipline for riders. Having Quaranth to care for, and having so many new responsibilities made her not miss Amira quite so much, but the sisters still kept in touch when they could.
At Quaranth's first flight, Adina learned a harsh lesson. It was her first time with anyone, and afterwards she became quite infatuated with the bronze rider who "caught" her. When he didn't return her affection, she was quite distressed. Afterwards for many turns, she had to remind herself that it was just a mating flight, nothing more. That is, until she met J'tan.
He was another bronzerider, his Visulenth caught Quaranth when Adina was still a junior weyrwoman. She felt her heart pitter patter after the flight, and firmly pushed it aside, contenting herself with admiring him from afar. J'tan didn't seem to take much notice of her, and it wasn't until many Turns later that the two finally connected. Adina was about 27 and had just stepped up to the rank of Weyrwoman Second. It was Quaranth's first flight as a higher rank, and Adina was more than pleased when J'tan's Visulenth caught her for a second time. It was only after his third catch that the pair began to acknowledge their feelings for each other. After a time they declared themselves weyrmates, and Visulenth almost always caught Quaranth in flight from that moment on. They were very much in love, and over the Turns they had two children, two strong boys who would later become dragonriders themselves.
Eight Turns later, the Weyrwoman stepped down, she and her gold were getting on in age, and felt it was time for a younger woman with more energy to lead the Weyr. This duty fell to Adina, who became Weyrwoman of Fort Weyr. It was no surprise to anyone when Quaranth was caught by Visulenth once again, making J'tan the Weyrleader along side Adina. Leadership came easily to both of them, and Adina became known for her no nonsense way of handling things.
Things were good at the Weyr, and many more Turns passed, when something strange began to happen. Quaranth took flight and laid her eggs, but the eggs never hatched. They all had to be taken /between/. Adina was concerned of course, but the dragonhealers could find nothing wrong with the gold, she seemed to be in perfect health. This happened several more times. At the same time, the length of time in between her mating flights became longer and longer, until one Turn, she didn't rise at all. Adina herself was 48 at the time, she knew her lifemate was getting older. The healers said that often golds would mirror their riders, stopping their mating cycles when their rider went through the "change". Adina wasn't sure if this was the case, but Quaranth seemed unconcerned, merely telling her rider that she didn't feel the need to rise any longer. Adina no longer felt she was doing her full duty to the Weyr, and so when the Weyrwoman Second's gold rose, Adina stepped down. Again, it was no surprise when Visulenth didn't make the catch, and J'tan stepped down as well.
Adina and J'tan lived in peaceful retirement after that, with less duties for each of them, they had more time to spend with each other. Adina began to know her sons, J'din and D'tar, a little better, whom by this time were dragonriders themselves.
But her happiness was not to last forever. Many Turns later, J'tan was struck by a wayward Thread in Fall one morning, and killed instantly. Adina was heartbroken. She withdrew to her weyr, hardly speaking to anyone but Quaranth. She began to feel more and more useless as the sevendays passed. Her true love was gone. Adina missed her sister, who was stationed at Cibryen Hold on the other side of the continent. She wasn't close to her sons, though she may have liked to be, but they didn't need her around. Quaranth wasn't clutching, and the new Weyrwoman Hulda, and the other goldriders, Yemira and Yula, seemed to be running things just fine without her. She still rode in the Queen’s wing, but Hulda began taking more and more duties from her. With Quaranth no longer clutching, she had little to spend her time on. The gossip reached her soon enough, that she was useless, wasn’t giving anything back to the Weyr as a goldrider should. Having nothing to do, and no one around who cared was very wearing on Adina, and she began to detest living at Fort.
When Adina heard that Cibryen Weyr was looking for a new Weyrlingmaster, she jumped at the chance to make herself useful again. She knew that it was unusual for a goldrider to serve as a Weyrlingmaster, but she also knew that she wouldn't be the only unusual thing at Cibryen either. Her sister Amira was living at Cibryen Hold, which only encouraged Adina more. If she could be close to her sister, and be a productive member of a Weyr, she felt she might be able to be happy again. It took some convincing on her part. She had many talks with Celaena and Kimana before finally showing them that she was right for the job. Goldrider or not, her leadership skills were more than adequate. She was still fit, and Quaranth, while older, was still in good shape too. And it was time for Adina to show everyone that she wasn't so useless after all.
Adina quickly fell into her new position at Cibryen. She enjoyed staying busy, and after the deaths of Weyrwomen Celaena and Kimana and their golds, Adina found herself also assisting Aylah in the running of the Weyr.
Robecca and Ulareth joined the Weyr soon after. She was an old friend of Adina's, having transferred in from Fort Weyr. This allowed Adina to focus her attention back on the Weyrlings. She has enjoyed interacting with them, and being out of the Queen's Wing is good for Quaranth, who isn't as agile as she used to be. Adina finally began to feel at home at Cibryen, despite the odd reactions of some who question Cibryen having a goldrider as their Weyrlingmaster.
When Ryuenth produced a clutch with a gold egg, Adina was very pleased. A girl named Nehanda Impressed the gold hatchling, named Samnahath, and Adina found herself once again teaching young goldriders their duties. It was a nice change of pace from the regular Weyrling classes. Adina has great hopes for Nehanda, knowing that she will make an excellent Weyrwoman one day.
Adina has passed many Weyrlings through the ranks of Weyrlinghood, watching with pride as they graduate and join the fighting wings of Cibryen Weyr. She feels she has truly found her niche in the world, and feels coming to Cibryen was one of the best decisions she has made.
