PERSONA DESCRIPTION
Height/Weight: 6’2”/200 lbs
Physical Description: Like his late father, Norvan is a large man. Unlike his father, much of his weight is muscle earned from years of mucking out runner stalls and doing work around the hold. He’s considered to be very attractive, and he takes pride in keeping in shape, mostly because it seems to impress the ladies. Norvan has wavy jet black hair, cut short and usually tousled from running his hands through it. He has his mother’s green eyes, though they are a little on the small side. He has large hands and an easy smile.
Style of dress: Norvan likes deep, dark colors like navy and maroon. He has a taste for fashionable clothing and takes great pride in his appearance, knowing it reflects not only on him but also the Hold.
Habits/Hobbies: Norvan enjoys training and riding his stallion Slate, and enjoys riding in general. He uses it as an escape from his responsibilities at the Hold. He also likes to play cards and enjoys dancing. For a time he was learning the guitar, but he became frustrated and gave it up. He now only plays on occasion, fiddling with it in his room where no one can hear. Secretly he hopes to improve, but is too proud to admit that he could still use lessons.
Pets: Rook, blue firelizard. Rook is a bold denim blue color, and fairly large as blues go. He's very curious and reactive to Norvan's feelings, who is quite empathic himself.
Slate, a charcoal runner stallion
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Personality: Norvan is a typical young man for the most part. Norvan is suave and outgoing, and is the heart’s desire of many a holder’s daughter. He might be considered somewhat rebellious, if he did not keep that side to himself. And he has had to, considering his position in life. All things considered, Norvan is proud of his lineage, and his biggest fear is failing his family. Hard work has always been present in his life, and he has no qualms about mucking out the stables. He used to detest sitting at a desk for hours doing hidework, but since officially being named Lord Holder he has had to change his attitude.
Generally speaking Norvan is outgoing and friendly. He cares deeply for all the people of his Hold and feels great responsibility for all of them, especially after the fires that endangered and injured many of them. Sometimes he feels like he’s two different people. Norvan, Lord Holder of Roaring Cliffs, and Norvan, the young man. In some aspects he enjoys the responsibilities of running a Hold. But on the other hand, there are many days when he just wants to be left alone, and do the things that any other normal person would do. When he broods about his life and his future, he often becomes very moody.
Since his mother's affair with Castimirr he has become much more withdrawn and somewhat depressed. He is afraid to open himself up to anyone now, fearful that they too will leave him just as all of his other close friends and family have done.
Background/history: Norvan was born to Lord Nomir and Lady Veranna of Roaring Cliffs on a rather damp day in the spring. Given his rank in life, Norvan was a rather spoiled child when he was young, and also had the benefit of being raised mostly by Veranna, instead of a foster mother. He grew up as a happy child.
From a young age he was taught the responsibilities of being a Lord Holder. He was also taught other curricular activitites such as riding, music, dancing and such. His mother intended for him to be a well mannered young man, and she certainly succeeded. But as he grew older, the same repeated lessons became boring to the young man. He had more interest in outside and social activities. And often he felt as if he was the only one with responsibilities, as the other children in the Hold had no such duties and were given more free time.
As time went on Norvan became more and more interested in runners. To him they were a silent friend, never demanding anything from him except companionship. He spent as much time as he could out in the stables. He also developed a new opinion about his father, whom he felt spent far too much of his time drinking.
Norvan became good friends with a local Holder's son, named Caidoc. They shared similar views about their fathers and life in general and became fast friends.
Nomir's drinking got worse and worse, until one night he drank himself into a stupor and passed away in his sleep. Norvan was in shock and Veranna was devastated. Even so, Veranna carried on running the Hold, much as she did even when Nomir was still alive.
Much to Norvan's surprise, Caidoc was Searched and went off to Cibryen Weyr where he Impressed bronze Thracoth at his very first Hatching. Norvan was glad that his friend, now C'ai, had found his own path in life, but he missed his company at the Hold. There were few others he felt comfortable sharing his feelings with.
Some time later a Lord Holder's Council was called in order to determine who would be granted Holdership of Roaring Cliffs, since Lord Nomir had passed on. Norvan and Veranna had asked the Council to allow Veranna to run Roaring Cliffs as Lady Holder. After much discussion this request was denied. The Council felt it was best for Norvan and Veranna to lead the Hold together. Hence, at the tender age of 19 Norvan was made Lord Holder of Roaring Cliffs, much to his dismay.
Norvan took some time coming to terms with his new title and responsibilities. He did want to be Lord Holder... just not so soon. He didn't see why it is necessary, when Veranna was perfectly capable of running the Hold on her own, but he now accepts his position in life.
When Norvan heard about a firelizard clutch from Marblaine's gold Gira at Cibryen, he set about procuring one of the eggs for himself. Truth be told he was a little jealous of C'ai and thought having a firelizard would not only give him a constant companion, but also a small glimpse of what having a dragon was like. Much to his delight, his egg contained a small blue firelizard, whom he named Rook.
After becoming Lord Holder, Norvan's cousin Iaera was fostered at Roaring Cliffs. She is the daughter of Lord Roban and Lady Sine (Veranna's cousin) of Lemos Hold. Norvan enjoyed getting to know another member of his family. However the visit was short lived when Iaera was Searched and then Impressed green Pisceth at Cibryen Weyr. He of course was happy for Iaera and C'ai, but Norvan began to feel like everyone who mattered to him was leaving him alone at the Hold.
However the Hold was prosperous and had recovered nicely after the disasterous fires, so there was really little that Norvan could complain about. Veranna soon found a new companion for him, Castimirr, the second son of Lord Selorik of Rakyw Hold. Lord Selorik thought it would be good for Castimirr to gain some experience outside of Rakyw, as his older brother Yarik was in line to inherit the Hold. Castimirr and Norvan were close in age and as they began to work together, sharing many of the Hold's duties they became very close friends. Norvan was pleased that he once again had a friend he could confide in. He found it ironic that Castimirr, who wanted so badly to be a Lord Holder could not, while he who had reservations had been forced into the position.
An opportunity for change came his way When Norvan had just turned 20. He happened to take a seat near K'ran, rider of Nabeth. To his complete and utter shock, Nabeth Searched him. To hear that he had been Searched, that he too might be worthy of a dragon was something he'd always dreamed of but knew would never happen. He berated himself for even thinking that he could accept, as much as he wanted to. Norvan couldn't leave his Hold, or leave his mother alone. Who would take the Hold after her if he left?
He turned down the Search and regretted it afterwards, becoming quite sullen. It was only after he explained to Veranna how trapped he felt, that she arranged for him to travel around for a few months to many of the major Holds on Pern, and gain some perspective on the rest of the world. Norvan enjoyed his time away from Roaring Cliffs Hold and returned feeling better about his decision to reject Search. His true place was at Roaring Cliffs.
Little did he know that whilst he was away, Castimirr and Veranna had developed feelings for each other and had begun an illicit relationship. When they finally revealed their secret to him, Norvan was more hurt than he had ever been in his entire life. The two people he trusted most in the world had betrayed him. They were choosing their own happiness at the risk of the entire Hold. Norvan disapproved greatly of their relationship but could do little to stop them.
Their dalliance was further compromised when Veranna suddenly found herself miscarrying after going *between*, unaware that she was pregnant with Castimirr's child. More people were discovering their relationship and Norvan was incredibly angry that Castimirr had put his mother through such a trying ordeal.
Things were tense afterwards, but Norvan was determined to move on. But the final blow came when Veranna told him that Castimirr had asked her to marry him. Not only had she accepted, but she was going to leave Roaring Cliffs to be with him. Castimirr's brother had died suddenly in a tragic accident, leaving him as the heir to Rakyw Hold.
Norvan was devastated by this news. He is still having a hard time adjusting to running the Hold by himself, as well as spending most of his time alone. Berand is the only person whom he would call anything close to a friend, although he is not particularly close to the Hold's Steward. Now Norvan is unsure of his future, although he knows his next duty is surely to marry and have a family. A task that might prove difficult with his emerging fear of getting close to anyone.
