Now it's time to create your persona! Please read all instructions carefully before submitting your persona. The BoD may request changes to the sheet. This can take several rounds. If you do not receive acknowledgement of your application within a day or two, please send a note to make sure we received it.

Directions

Please keep in mind that all persona queries need to be directed to the bod address. If you send them to individuals, your queries may be delayed or missed, and we can't be responsible for them. The bod email is bod AT cibryen DOT com, and ALL queries should be sent there.
  1. Read the rules. Read them again. Read them one more time. We'll know if you haven't read them when you submit your persona sheet, so make sure you do. If you have not read the rules, you will not be approved until you have.
  2. Read the Persona Writing Guide.  This will give you some helpful pointers, and will help you avoid the pitfalls and mistakes of first-time persona writers.
  3. Copy and paste the persona sheet to notepad, and start writing! Backgrounds must be at least two GOOD SIZED paragraphs.
  4. Check the list of ranks for the rank you'd like to write for. ALL personae have a rank, so please look.
  5. Spell check the sheet. If you don't, your persona will be rejected until you DO.
  6. Submit your sheet to the BoD at bod AT cibryen DOT com, attached in text-only format ONLY please.  No Word documents. If for some reason the email is not answered, or bounces, email the BoD immediately, and we'll check into it. You should receive an acknowledgement in a day or two, if you don't, resend or poke us.
  7. Make any changes requested by the Persona Approval Team, and then RESUBMIT IT TO THE BOD. Do NOT send it to the person who requested the change. No changes will be acknowledged unless you send them TO the BoD.
  8. After your persona is approved, you will be added to our mailing list
  9. Start Roleplaying!

Adoptables

Don't feel up to writing a persona sheet?  Want to just get in on roleplaying as quickly as possible?  Try adopting a persona!  These sheets are pre-approved, and ready for play...just remember, you have to play them like they are written! Browse the Adoptables Page. This is the fastest way to become a member. Remember, all the same rules apply, and when you have decided which one you want, read the rules. Complete the new member and mundane info, make SURE you have read the rules, and send the requested information along with the desired character's name to bod AT cibryen DOT com. Existing members need not complete the new member info.

SPELLCHECK YOUR PERSONA SHEET. Personae that are submitted but not spellchecked will be rejected. You can delete the stuff in the (parentheses) and the sections you don't need, but otherwise DO NOT edit the persona sheet. How you submit it is how it will appear on the webpage.

Cliches - Here is a list of cliches that make the Board of Directors twitch. There's nothing inherently wrong with these, just we've seen them sooo many times that we'd really like to see something new. We'll ask you to change them if we see it, so save yourself a step by avoiding them now.

  1. Threadscores: "Threadscores? What? What do you mean, threadscores are cliche?" Well, for starters, thread is a voracious organism that devours all organic life it touches. This is not a piece of glass to get cut on, and get a nice clean scar from. Want a nice, detailed of what a thread injury is like? Check out the article that Vicky, from Arolos, has written about it. If thread hits your back, you have about a second or two before it eats through your leathers and cuts your spine. Thread doesn't glance off. It grabs on, and tries to eat you. Any personae who are NOT dragonriders and have threadscores will be immediately rejected. Without a dragon to take you between, you're dead. Thread can devour a cow in about 2 minutes. Humans are a lot smaller than cows. If you absolutely MUST have a threadscore, we have to see a good explanation for it, why they survived, and how long it took to recover. And please, no more "threadscore from mistakes made as a weyrling" please. Seen it TOO many times. Threadscores with no explanation will be rejected.

  2. Names: Anything beginning with "A", especially "Al". Enough already. ;) There's 25 more letters in the alphabet, pick one. We have plenty of other characters whose names start with A. And tell me, what's wrong with a name that you can pronounce, eh? While you're at it, remember to pick phonetic names. Unpronounceable names are aggravating, and unfeasible. We won't accept terran names, or names based on any other fandom. Japanese names just don't have a place on Pern, because Pern isn't Japan.

  3. Skill with a sword: Especially if you hapen to be a tomboyish girl. Just...no. Pernese are not skilled swordfighters. There are a few guards around, but they don't go around teaching little girls how to use one, and there would be no need to.

  4. Tragic deaths of close relatives: Its been done to death. My Mom Was Raped In Front of My Eyes ® is OLD. Don't do it. Tragic backgrounds can be useful for character development, but there is nothing wrong with having a nice normal childhood. I know plenty of people who grew up with normal parents and no major tragedies, and they still have plenty of hangups.

  5. Book character clones: This includes but is not limited to: Menolly (Master Harper at 12, 30 firelizards), Lessa (Short, dark haired, fiery-tempered, HAD, etc ad nauseam), Robinton (Precocious harper who is Loved By All).

  6. Survivalist kids living on their own/fostered after their family/friends/parents/etc were killed by bandits: I wish I were kidding. We see these ALL the time. There are not roving bands of holdless thieves running around killing, raping, and robbing people. Thread has a nasty habit of eating things not in holds.

  7. Physical traits: lavendar eyes, odd colored eyes, hair or eye colors that don't exist in nature, rakishly placed scars, orbs, oculars, or anything else other than eyes (eyes are just fine, really). We're not going to approve grey, silver, lavendar, or gold eyes. We don't care if they are possible. We're not going to do it.

  8. And also do not submit: Orphaned runaways who wander Pern, pranksters, twins or triplets, gold/bronzerider/lord/lady scions, greenrider breeders (fighting dragons, people), goths, fiery redheads, tormented loners, and young prodigies of any kind.

Persona Birthday - If you need a random birthday for your persona, or you just need to know what turn they were born in, you can enter their current age into out birthday calculator and it will give you the information you need.

Persona Sheet Example - Here is an example if you need to know where to start in writing your persona sheet. We're not looking for novels here, just descriptiveness. This is a satirical sheet, not meant to be copied, but used as a guideline. Please, don't do two sentence backgrounds. Try to do at least two paragraphs, good sized ones. More is better. We suggest you write three, one for childhood, one for  teenage years, and one for adulthood. If you don't do AT LEAST that much, you'll get your sheet returned with a request to write more.

Kyliraenalia and gold Jeriluaneth

Copy and paste the persona sheet into notepad and fill out the requested info. Use the link to the Blank Persona sheet below to write your sheet, and refer to the sheet here on this page as a guide only. Don't send us a sheet with the instructions on it. We know perfectly well what the instructions are...we wrote them. Please don't change the format and spacing of the sheet. Delete sections that you don't use (like candidate info for a rider -- not necessary) Make sure you save a copy for your records...you'll need it for roleplaying.  If you are an existing member, you can delete the "New Member" section...you're not a new member anymore!  And always...SPELLCHECK IT!

Send this completed form in .txt format (use notepad) to the Persona Approval Team.  Do not send it to the BoD address, just send it to bod@cibryen.com. Please, do not send Word documents or .rtf (rich text format).  Plain text only.

NPC Record Sheet - For NPCs only. Regularly used personae need a full sheet.

COOPERATIVE 9TH PASS PERSONA SHEET (REQUIRED)

Date created:
Date updated:

NEW MEMBER INFORMATION (REQUIRED if not a member already)

Other clubs:
Have you read all, some, or none of the books:
How did you find out about us?

MUNDANE INFORMATION (REQUIRED)

Name:
Email:
Birthdate:
AIM screen name:

PERSONA INFORMATION (REQUIRED. This is the part of the sheet that will be displayed on the webpage, so be sure to grammar and spell check it.)

Name: (Avoid terran names. There are no Susans on Pern. Also, try to think about how your character's name is pronounced; If you can't say it out loud ten times quickly without messing it up, you should probably consider something else. Most names are an amalgam of the parents' names; This doesn't mean they'll be unpronounceable.)
Pronunciation:
Nickname:
Honorific: (if male rider only)

Birthdate:
Current Age:

Gender:
Rank: (All pernese have ranks. See the complete rank listing under "joining" on the webpage. Candidates must be Searched. Select a rank OTHER than candidate.)

Birthplace: (There's nothing wrong with being born in the Weyr's territory. Not EVERYONE has to transfer. They're just assumed to have always been there.)
Current Location:

Mother/Father: (name, age, rank and location)
Siblings: (names, ranks, ages, locations, list each on a separate line)

Children: (list each on a separate line)
Significant others: (Mates, friends, etc.)

PERSONA DESCRIPTION (REQUIRED)

Height: (Be realistic. No one is going to be 6'1 and 100 pounds and be healthy)
Body Type: (Be specific and descriptive. This is a short description of the persona's build and body shape: not just "slim", but "slim-built, with toned muscles from heaving firestone sacks around; narrow-waisted, long-legged; arm and shoulder muscles are well-developed",

Physical Description: ( Build, Hair color/style, Eye color/shape, Complexion/Skin Color, Facial features, what your character LOOKS like. What makes them distinctive. Try to imagine you're describing them to someone who is blind. We don't know about those dimples in their cheeks unless you tell us about them. Try and avoid lists, as well.)

Style of dress: (Not a specific outfit. This is what sort of things they tend to wear)

Habits/Hobbies: (Everyone does SOMETHING in their free time.)

Pets: (No firelizards. All firelizards must be Impressed. No other pets without EXTREMELY good reasons. No dragonrider living in a high-level weyr is going to have a dog, and its not likely they'd have a cat. They have a dragon to take care of, and Pernese treat animals like farm animals...practical animals only [sorry, NO poodles. Period] that serve a function. Pets are usually a luxury reserved for the privileged.)
Sexual Orientation: (homosexual, bisexual, or heterosexual)

Personality: (Please don't just list traits. We're looking for at least a paragraph here. Be descriptive, but not contradictory. You cannot have shy, outgoing people. What are your characters goals: short-term, long-term and life-long? What motivates your character? What is your character's greatest vice? virtue? temptation? fear?)

Background/history: (At least two or three good paragraphs. Be descriptive. Try to avoid overdone cliches, like tortured holders, kids born in caves, and any kind of fighter-type. Weapons training is not that common on Pern. Feel free to ask the approval team for help if you're not sure, and check out the Persona Creation guide on the website for additional help)

DRAGON INFORMATION (REQUIRED- if dragonrider only)

Name: (All dragons' names end in -th. Always, no exceptions.)
Color: (Metallics subject to BoD approval: Request new dragon color.)
Weyr/Age Impressed: (Where was your dragon Impressed? How old was your persona when they Impressed)
Date Hatched/Sire/Dam: (If your dragon was impressed in a PC weyr ONLY. If they weren't Impressed in one of the Ninth Pass's PC Weyrs, Don't worry about this information.)
Size/Wingspan: (Use the wingspan calculator to find this)
Physical Description:
Personality:

CRAFTER INFORMATION

Craft:
Specialty:
Rank:
Turns in craft:
Date/Age Apprenticed: ABSOLUTELY NO APPRENTICES UNDER THE AGE OF 12. No exceptions.
Date/Age Journeyman: (no younger than 17)
Date/Age Master: (no younger than 30)
Studied under: (Who trained them in their craft?)

***If you are applying for Healercraft, the rank advancement is somewhat slower than in other crafts:
These are the age minimums for the Healercraft

  • 17-18 turns, Senior Apprentice (minimum 6 years as Junior Apprentice)
  • 20-21 turns, Journeyman (minimum 3 years as Senior Apprentice)

(REQUIRED)
(This is for our persona listing. Please list everyone you mentioned in the background of your persona and their NPCs. List them each on a separate line. It'll just take a second, and will help make the world of the Cooperative Ninth Pass more complete. This is REQUIRED. You'll be asked again if you miss it, so don't forget it.)
