Frequently Asked Questions

As time continues, we have many questions asked by new and old members alike.  Okay, granted, some of these haven't been asked, but they will be, and we wanted to have information ready and waiting when the question comes up. :)  This section will increase in size as questions come up, and we answer them. If you have a question that you feel should be here, please email the BoD.

QDo books exist?

A.  Yes. A non-electric version of the printing press has been invented.  Books still aren't easy to come by, and hides are still widely used, (paper is expensive) but books are available...don't expect them to be cheap though.  Most people probably don't have them.

QCan my character have a tattoo?

A.  Yes, but you won't find the vivid, brightly colored tattoos of today among the Pernese.  Tattoos are only found in black, or henna-like colors.  Tattooing methods are primitive, and excruciating, so not very popular. Obviously, they don't have the electric tattooing needles you find in today's tattoo parlors, and things are much likely to be sanitary, so infections are possible. Large tattoos are extremely unlikely, as the experience would be agonizing.

QWhat kind of clothes do the Pernese wear?

A.  Generally, medieval-styles.  Breeches, tunics, and leather jerkins, cloaks, leather boots, things like that. Most fabrics are probably wool from llamas, sheep, goats, and mountain ovines, but flax, a Pernese fiber similar to flax, sisal, and cotton is raised at Southern Boll Hold.  Cotton is expensive, and a luxury fabric on Pern.  Silk does not exist on Pern (silkworms didn't make it on Pern), but sisal can be used to make similar fabrics, and nearly invisible sheers. Styles of dress vary between different climates, and weyrfolk tend to be a little less conservative about dress than holders. Weyrwomen are much more likely to be seen in breeches than hold women.  Northerners tend to dress more warmly, and in the South, people are always coming up with cooler clothes to wear.  Its not unusual to see a Southern bather swimming in a Pernese equivalent to a bikini (obviously, these won't be in the bright, unusual styles and fabrics you find nowadays), most likely small cloth pieces strung together.  Zippers don't exist on Pern either; buttons, drawstrings, or a two-sided substance similar to Velcro are used to fasten trousers and blouses.  Its not uncommon for dragonriders to make their own clothing in their spare time.

QCan I have a gold dragon?

A.  Sorry, no.  We have no openings for adult riders at this point in time, but look for available gold eggs in future clutches!

Q Can I have a bronze dragon?

A.  Yes!  BUT...you don't get one for free.  You're gonna have to work for it.  We don't have any openings for original bronzes at the moment (there will be more in the future) but we do have several adoptables available.  Keep in mind though, just because you ask for one, doesn't mean you'll get it.  You'll have to write a great sheet, and RP a chromatic for a while. There are posting requirements for ranking characters.

Q. Can I have a white/black/red/etc dragon?

A.  Absolutely not.  We only allow the basic five colors, gold, bronze, brown, blue, and green, as per Anne.
