Ninth Pass

History

Wavecrest was established near the end of the 7th interval as an experiment. Distant relations between hold and weyr had many weyrs worried, and for one Lord Holder, Lord Mairen of in particular, whose family had been devoted to the weyrs since the first weyr was established during the first pass, it was unacceptable. He approached the Weyrleaders of Cibryen Weyr with a proposition: Scout the Southern Continent for a suitable place, and establish a weyr and hold, extraordinarily close to each other, with exceptionally close ties. Holders and weyrfolk would be encouraged to traverse between the two, and all could benefit from the pairing.

The Weyrleaders were intrigued, and since at the time Cibryen had an abundance of golds, they agreed. They sent riders to scout the terrain in the south to find a suitable place. A fisher's boat in need brought the riders to the coast, where they rescued the crew, and made an astonishing discovery. As they watched the fisher's boat shatter on the rocks at the base of a fantastically huge cliff, they noticed something strange: caves. Upon further investigation the caves were huge, and excitedly the riders reported back to the Weyrleaders of Cibryen about the location.  Located to the far west of the Southern continent, the site was perfect.

The next big undertaking was to convert the caves system to living space. This is where Lord Mairen proved his devotion to the project. He sent crafters and holders from his own hold to help the weyrfolk, and the two groups -- normally estranged by status and jealousy -- worked side by side to establish the weyr. The labor was hard, but the morale was light, and already something extraordinary was beginning to develop between weyr and hold. As soon as the caves were ready, the weyrfolk began to transfer in, led by Cibryen's junior weyrwomen Maylin and Heris. As soon as the main bulk of those needed to run the weyr were comfortably ensconced in their new home, work began on the cliff above the weyr, and the Marien Hold nearby. When Maylin's gold Naryloath rose to mate first, she became the first Weyrwoman of the newly dubbed Wavecrest Weyr, and her Weyrleader was C'ran, bronze Nonteth's rider. Heris's golden Cokisorth was the next to rise, and bronze Vorluth's rider, P'lory, was named the Weyrsecond.

Overall, the work on the new weyr and hold took most of the last 30 turns of the 7th Interval to complete. When the first signs of the Red Star's next Pass could be seen, the Star Stones were erected, and indeed, the signs were imminent...Thread was to Fall on Pern again. Just before the beginning of the 8th Pass, Weyrwoman Maylin retired, leaving her Weyrwoman Second in charge. The next gold to rise was not Cokisorth, however, it was golden Iolath. Iolath's young rider Kay became the Weyrwoman, and would lead the weyr through the turbulent Pass.

Other weyrs were somewhat skeptical of this upstart weyr's ability to handle the Pass, especially with so much jungle-covered area to protect, but the heart of the weyrfolk and holders prevailed, and no tragedy befell the weyr. Wavecrest flourished, and the weyr had a healthy population, with rarely fewer than five golds. The 8th Pass swept by, and Wavecrest came out on the other side a triumphant success. The experiment had proven to be a good one, and Lord Mairen's legacy lives on in triumph.

The current Weyrwoman is Vaeniel, rider of gold Muirneath, and the Weyrwoman Second is Niamh, rider of gold Oisinth. The Weyrleader that held the position for so long and violated the trust and love of most of the weyr was N'mor, who has now been deposed by new blood in M'jaran. Vaeniel was more than relieved to see N'mor go, and after a series of difficulties with the ex-Weyrleader, Vaeniel forced him to transfer to Igen Weyr.

Oisinth and Muirneath clutched on the same day, giving Wavecrest two strong clutches to fill the empty Weyrling Barracks. Wavecrest is buffeted by hurricanes, typhoons, and hot weather, in addition to the erratic, unpredictable Thread Falls that plague all of Pern, but Vaeniel and M'jaran seem to be a good team, and are leading Wavecrest well.

All of the eggs from both clutches hatched, including one surprise that was desparately needed by the weyr: Golden Talenoth, her egg buried by her mother in some peculiar ritual to prevent the candidates she despised from bothering her precious egg. The gold hatchling, fierce in all ways, Impressed young Noenne, and brought a third gold to the weyr that saw so few.

It is now the turn 2539, 19 turns into the 9th Pass, and Wavecrest is strong, untouched by the plague that wracked the Northern Continent and ravaged Cibryen Weyr.
