Climate

The weyr resides on the southern continent, so naturally it is hot. Very hot. Quite tropical, and heavily wooded, this area rightly qualifies as a jungle. Sunburns are a frequent ailment, and the Healers here have become quite proficient in dealing with sunstroke of various degrees, sun poisoning, and dehydration. Newcomers here often misjudge their ability to handle the heat, and find themselves dehydrated, sunburned, and dizzy. This is an extremely humid area, with temperature rarely dropping below 70, even at night.

The winds are constant, blowing over the cliffs from the sea, and cliff-side weyrs are always cooled by them.

Description

Wavecrest Weyr is located in the sheer face of a cliff overlooking the ocean. The highest weyrs are reserved for the larger dragons, the golds and the bronzes, while the lower ones were designed for the much smaller browns, blues, and greens. All of the dragon weyrs overlook the ocean, and have a fantastic view of the ocean complete with sea salt in the air and the breakers crashing on the rocks below. The support staff and non-rider persons live in the far back regions of the caves system, and a complex system of corridors leads to the surface entrance cavern. The weyr was established in a vast cave system by the ocean, and the passages were bored from the top-level caves to the surface. A massive entrace cavern large enough to admit small dragons has been carved directly into the ground, and during intense queen flights, weyrlings are sent to the rooms and cooridors below the surface. By the time they are large enough to no longer fit in the weyr, they are usually old enough to handle the gold flights.

Rider weyrs are usually separated from their dragon's ledges by a curtain, but heavy metal storm doors close over all cliff-side entrances and windows to protect the inhabitants from the violent storms that periodically ravage the coastline. Occasionally, those assigned to close the doors in vacant weyrs will forget their duties, and are subsequently set to cleaning up the mess the storm leaves behind. Most riders close their storm doors, and escape to another weyr or location unaffected by the storm, but many adventurous dragons - and sometimes riders - ride out the storm on their ledges.

A series of heavy stone buildings built from the stone taken from inside the caves cover the surface, establishing a unique layout unlike any other weyr on Pern, the Hatching Grounds and the Weyrling Barracks. Few residents of this weyr have weight problems, as a great deal of walking is necessary to traverse the areas in and around the weyr, although there are usually enthusiastic weyrlings and junior riders available to ferry weyrfolk around.

The sands of the Hatching Grounds are a unique volcanic black and tend to reach temperatures hotter than the average Hatching Grounds. The Hatching Grounds are connected to the Weyrling Barracks by a long breezeway, and the Candidates usually stay in a building ensconced between the Weyrling Barracks and Hatching Grounds.

Seacraft is a staple craft here, and a Seacraft Hall, which includes the ever-popular dolphin craft, is located a good distance down the coastline where the violent cliffs soften into sandy beaches. Dragons fly constantly in and out of the weyrs, and the calmer seas away from the crashing breakers are a rainbow of dragons swimming with the dolphins. The fireheights are located in a mountain range located nearby, but dragons must bring the firestone to the weyr from the heights to a special storage facility near the weyr. This duty is usually delegated to weyrlings that have begun to fly and go between, or riders on punishment detail. Dragons subsist on a diet mainly of fish and herdbeast.

The land atop the cliff home of Wavecrest Weyr has been tamed back green-free for a solid mile around the weyr proper. The area separating the weyr from Mairen Hold has been tamed, and is (usually) free of nasty predators like felinesbut the farther inland you go, the more jungle-like and heavily wooded the terrain becomes. A well-traveled road between Mairen and Wavecrest is maintained by Holders and Weyrfolks alike. Hunters patrol the area to ward off wildcats or other beasties, but the presence of the dragons usually frightens most dangerous wild animals.  Weyrlings and dragons unable to fly are housed in barracks atop the cliff, especially designed for them with a lake reserved for Weyrlings and injured dragons.  Its a smaller lake fed from the same freshwater spring that feeds Mirror Lake.
